  Identifying Financial Statements Fraud

Financial statements that overstate revenue and assets, and understate expenses and debt mislead investors, lenders and the public into thinking the company is performing better than it is. Recent history gives us a sad litany of public companies in which investors and creditors have lost millions. Think of World Com, Adelphi, and Enron. If you have ever wondered what the manipulation techniques are, this is the webinar for you. We will explore simple and complex techniques that will change the way you look at the financial statements provided by your customers and vendors. Some background in accounting would be helpful

Gene Bucciarelli is principal of Internal Control Systems and a Senior Adjunct Accounting Professor at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He performs extensive research and investigations into fraudulent financial statements and conducts seminars on this subject in international markets for CFO's, regulators, auditors, and mangers of financial reporting.

The webinar will be a summary of my standard two-day seminar on the subject. I will discuss and provide some detail concerning the:

  • Principal reasons for manipulation of financial statements
  • Basic accounting rules for each account category discussed
  • Actual case studies showing the manipulation techniques that violated the basic accounting rules by overstating or understating the following:

    • Accounts receivable allowance account

  • Primary documents and calculations that can be used to indicate that fraud might be occurring

    Gene Bucciarelli MBA CPA is the principal of Internal Control Systems, a community Bank internal audit outsource firm. His professional career includes the following positions and relevant experience:

  • Three years at Touche Ross & Co. CPA's.
  • Seven years as VP and Audit Manager for Wells Fargo Bank
  • Two years as VP and Controller for WestAmerica Bank
  • 20 years as principal of Internal Control Systems
  • Expert witness for banking operational and employee fraud lawsuits
  • Author of "Are your Internal Controls like Swiss Cheese" series, featured on Bankersonline.com
  • Twenty five years as a Senior Adjunct (part time) professor at Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA teaching accounting, auditing, and finance. Currently teaching in the Executive MBA program.
