The Security Officer's primary duty is to develop and administer a written Security Program for the institution. This is not an option for any financial institution -- banks, credit unions or thrifts -- it is a regulatory requirement. And even if it wasn't a requirement, initiating and maintaining an effective Security Program just makes good business sense. The Security Program must contain policies and procedures that address robberies -- as well as an initial and periodic training program that also addresses robbery.
The Security Program should combine procedural security techniques with physical ones. The industry-standard development and implementation an effective Security Program relies upon the Bank Protection Act (an act passed by Congress) and as a model. The verbatim regulations and related issuances that address security requirements for all types of financial institutions may be located on BankersOnline.
Robbery is a concern to every financial institution -- and robbery is one of the most feared of all crimes. However, most institutions:
Don't conduct an appropriate risk assessment exercise to determine vulnerabilities to robberies and related crimes;
Have developed ineffective policies and procedures for addressing the "before-during-after" robbery tasks;
Train their employees to respond to only one or two kinds of robberies -- and there are actually several kinds, each with its own mechanical characteristics and suggested responses;
Often don't train their employees how to prevent robberies and related crimes -- by multiple means;
Have not differentiated between "business" crimes and "personal" crimes in their training programs;
Train their employees how to react during a robbery -- but not also how to think; and
Have never developed or implemented a process that solicits safety recommendations from their employees -- the very people who face the prospect of becoming a robbery victim every day.
The "Robbery Prevention, Response & Aftermath Techniques" webinar will show participants how to:
Conduct an initial and continuing robbery risk assessment;
Identify policies and procedures that should be retained, modified or eliminated;
Determine if its robbery training program is appropriate and effective;
Establish a mechanism that encourages employees to make recommendations that will likely enhance employee and customer safety;
Prepare robbery response training materials for all levels of employees; and
Plan for the natural physical, mental and emotional fallout that employees will experience after a traumatic event.
Special note: Included with the webinar training materials is a comprehensive "Robbery Response Techniques" training program workbook, leader's guide and PowerPoint presentation that participants may use to train their institution's employees!
