  The Security Department & Security Personnel
(Presented By: Dana Turner)

Ensuring that your security department operates as effectively as possible means more than conducting good investigations. The security function may work best when several skilled people apply their respective knowledge, training and expertise to address security issues. Especially if your Security Officer is part-time, you need to know that the department is functioning effectively and that everything that needs to be done, is. Investigate what will work best for your institution and get the most from your security dollars whether you have one person in that department, or 100.

"Security" is the evolutionary process through which we provide a safe and secure environment for our employees to work and our customers to do business. While the mandated Security Officer position doesn't have to be a full-time one, the person filling that position does have to be a professional Security Officer at all times -- regardless of how much time that the person can devote to the role. And no one person needs to perform all of the security-related tasks within the institution -- the security function actually works best when several skilled people apply their respective knowledge, training and expertise to address security issues. The Security Officer's role isn't an ordinary job and it's not for everyone. The Security Officer's position needs to be filled by a person who has the special skills to do it right -- skills that are often diverse and that he/she has acquired through training, education and experience.

The purpose of this presentation is to suggest personnel who may logically perform safety and security-related tasks -- and to define and describe:

- Why the institution's needs determine the Security Officer's duties;
- What common security practices should be applied;
- What are the Security Officer's most common problems; and
- Who else has security responsibilities.

No one person needs to -- and perhaps, shouldn't -- perform all of the security-related tasks within the institution. But the Security Department is the logical function for coordinating the development, implementation, monitoring and correction of safety and security policies, procedures and practices that may affect the entire institution. This presentation presents a logical and strategic model that's designed to help any Security Officer understand the true scope of the Security Department's duties and responsibilities within an institution -- and then request appropriate staffing to meet these demands in a professional manner. By understanding the cause and effect relationships between the Security Department's mission and the other business units, a Security Officer may make reasonable and logical suggestions about ways that the institution's personnel may contribute to the security and loss prevention efforts. Many persons may play important and pivotal safety and security-related roles, including the:

- Board Of Directors;
- President/CEO;
- Security Committee;
- Security Officer;
- Assistant Security Officer;
- Fraud Investigator;
- Legal Counsel;
- Auditor;
- Human Resources Manager;
- Information Systems Manager;
- Compliance Manager;
- Retail Operations Manager;
- Facilities Manager;
- Department Managers (Unit Security Officers);
- Insurance Manager;
- Supervisors; and
- Line staff.

This presentation is intended for:

- Security Officers;
- Boards of directors;
- Auditors;
- Human Resources Managers;
- Retail Operations Managers;
- Operations Officers; and
- Training Specialists.
